INTRODUCTION
From Mountain Kit to Running Shoes
If you have spent any time in the fell or ultra-running world, you have probably come across OMM, or Original Mountain Marathon. They have been producing some of the most trusted kit for the outdoors for years and their reputation has been built on accessories and clothing, until late last year when they introduced their first running shoe; the OMM Fell Shoe. Since then they have released their Trail Shoe and the Ultra Shoe which we are looking at here.
Does anyone else breathe a breath of fresh air seeing shoes named in an easy way to remember and understand what they are intended for?

The OMM Ultra running shoe is their latest offering in the shoe line up, and it is one worth paying attention to. It has been designed for runners who need real cushioning, proper protection and grip built for the mixed terrain you will encounter on long-distance runs.
The Plus Fit variant is worth calling out specifically. If you have ever found that trail shoes feel uncomfortably narrow across the forefoot, particularly as your feet swell over longer efforts, this version has been designed for you. It offers more volume in the toe box whilst still keeping that secure, locked-in feel that you need when the trail gets unpredictable.

Why Should I Buy The OMM Ultra Running Shoe

Plus Fit Wider Forefoot
If you are someone who has always found trail shoes a little too snug across the toes, the Plus Fit design is a genuine game changer. It provides additional forefoot volume compared to the standard model, giving your foot the space it needs to splay naturally, especially on those longer runs where swelling is just part of the deal.

Two-Layered Engineered Mesh Upper
The upper is built from a soft, dual-layer engineered mesh that manages to feel both lightweight and durable at the same time. The two-layer construction moves with your foot rather than against it, which matters a lot when you are hours into a run and your feet are doing all sorts. Perforations throughout the upper keep air flowing and heat escaping, so your feet stay cooler and more comfortable regardless of how hard you are pushing. OMM has also added TPU overlays across the toe box and in the areas that tend to take the most punishment, giving you a shoe that will hold up to repeated use without falling apart on you.

EVA Midsole with Wave Shape Foam
The midsole is where a lot of the magic happens in the OMM Ultra. It uses a thick wedge of lightweight EVA foam, moulded into a wave shape that does two things really well: it cushions the impact of each foot strike and it keeps your foot from shifting around inside the shoe. That combination of cushioning and stability is exactly what you want when you are covering ground across constantly changing terrain. It is tuned to feel soft enough to protect your joints over long distances whilst still returning enough energy to keep you moving efficiently.

Vibram Megagrip Outsole
If you know anything about trail running shoes, you will know that Vibram Megagrip is one of the most respected outsole compounds out there. It grips on wet surfaces, it grips on dry surfaces, and it holds up over serious mileage. The 4 mm Vibram Traction Lugs give you that extra bite on ascents and descents, digging into the ground where you need it most and providing confidence when the trail gets loose or technical.
X-Lacing System
The X-Lacing system is designed to spread tension evenly across the midfoot so that the shoe feels secure without creating pressure points. If you have ever dealt with uncomfortable tightness across the top of the foot mid-run, you will appreciate how much thought has gone into this. It locks your foot in place without pinching, which makes a real difference when you are moving over uneven ground and your foot is working hard to keep you balanced.
ON THE TRAIL
How It Performs In The Field
Out on the trail, the OMM Ultra feels like a shoe that has been designed by people who actually run in these conditions. The EVA midsole gives you a cushioned, dependable platform that absorbs impact without making you feel disconnected from the ground beneath you, and the wave shape foam does a good job of keeping things stable when the terrain gets unpredictable.
The Vibram Megagrip outsole lives up to its reputation. On light trail and mixed surfaces, the grip is consistent and reassuring, and the 4mm lugs handle loose or damp ground without feeling clunky when you hit harder packed sections or gravel paths. The mesh upper keeps things well-ventilated during sustained efforts, and combined with the TPU reinforcement, you get a shoe that breathes well without feeling fragile. The X-Lacing system ties it all together, keeping your foot locked in comfortably from start to finish.
